Overview
Before lighting, always be aware of where you place your candle and check for potential risks. Be aware of the heat generated by the candle flame and melting wax and remove any nearby hazards. Do not place lit candles on or against any delicate surfaces or furnishings as the glass vessel can become hot. Do not leave burning candles unattended or lit in rooms with strong drafts, poor ventilation or high humidity.
Experience and Burning Technique
- It’s important to light your candles under the correct conditions to get the best experience of the scent and to evenly burn the beautifully scented wax. The first burn is the most important as it sets the burn memory. When lighting for the first time, ensure it is alight long enough for an even wax pool to develop to the edge of the vessel.
- Our candles are hand poured in Sydney, Australia and made from a soy and coconut wax blend with low paraffin wax. This naturally derived wax blend burns at lower temperatures than candles containing high paraffin, causing the wax to melt slowly and evenly.
- Let your candle burn for at least one hour on the first burn to allow the pool of melted wax to reach the edge of the vessel. Letting the pool of wax melt evenly and to the edge of the vessel the very first time the candle is lit creates a “burn memory”. A burn memory is important as the wax will continue to burn in an even level if the first burn is even and prevents “tunnelling” from occurring.
-
Tunnelling refers to the wax melting only in a coin-sized width in the center of the candle, creating a “tunnel” around the wick and an uneven burn. Tunnelling usually happens when a candle has been repeatedly burned for short durations and cannot be corrected by proper burning technique after the tunnelling is more than 5mm-1cm deep.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources and flammable objects.
Extensive Do/Don’t Safety List:
Before lighting/ avoid hazards
- Always trim wicks to 5mm length before lighting.
- Remove any nearby objects that could catch alight such as decorations, plants or hanging objects that can be damaged by heat or flame.
- Do not burn candles outdoors.
- Do not place lit candles on uneven surfaces or near vibrations.
- Do not place lit candles on or against delicate surfaces or furnishings that could be damaged by heat or proximity to flame.
- Do not place lit candles on or against heat sensitive surfaces such as glass, wood, mirrors, or fabrics. Placing lit candles on or against any delicate surfaces may risk damage or markings to your furnishings.
- Do not place lit candles directly against walls, glass panes, curtains, tiles or mirrors. Leave at least 20cm between a lit candle and a wall or mirror.
Safety:
- Always burn candles within sight.
- Do not leave candles burning unattended.
- Do not burn candles within reach of children or pets.
- Do not move a candle when lit.
- Never burn a scented candle for more than 2 hours.
- Never burn a candle when the wax level reaches less than 2cm from the base.
Ventilation/Room Conditions:
- Never burn candles directly next to open windows and doors or directly under air-conditioning vents or fans.
- Always burn candles in well-ventilated areas with some access to indirect, fresh air flow.
- Never burn candles in closed, steamy rooms with high humidity such as bathrooms while running a hot shower.
- Do not burn multiple candles near each other.
- Do not burn candles near any other heat sources or open flames.
Extinguishing:
- Never extinguish candles using water.
- After extinguishing a flame, make sure the wick stands upright in the centre of the vessel.
- Wait for wax to solidify and become cool to touch before handling or moving.
